I Never Stopped Caring
When you called me a few days ago to tell me you were dating a mutual friend, I have to admit, my heart sank to the ground. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy for you. We talked for an hour about everything to do with your new life and my new life. I’m glad we did. The truth is… sometimes I wonder about you. I still hope you’re doing well, but I know you are. I always assume you’re doing alright for yourself and you don’t need me for anything. What if things weren’t going as you planned? Would you call me? Probably not. There’s somebody new and he’s getting that phone call whenever you need somebody the most.
It’s alright, but just so you know, I care too. Not just about you, but about your life. We broke up and decided not to be together. We stopped working on it, but my heart never stopped working. We rarely talk to each other anymore, and that’s fine. Yeah, I still care. You know that. I know that. I just had to put it into words. That’s why I’m writing today.
You’ve known me long enough to know the type of person I am. The moment I start caring about somebody, it never stops. I do it whole heartedly. Thank you for calling me that day. You understand that I am the kind of guy who cares about how your life is changing for the most beautiful of ways to the most ugly of ways. It’s not because I’m nosy. I just never stopped caring. I hope you never did either.
